Retiring This Blog

Attention: After more than ten years, I’ve decided to retire this blog. I will no longer be adding posts, except on special occasions. I’m leaving it up because the information and advice in the links and posts are still useful. The most useful links are over on the left, under: GETTING HELP – CONTACTING A COLD CASE SQUAD.

I will still answer questions in the comment sections if I can help. From time to time I will also update the links, and my list of cold case squads.

Mafia in Smithers WV, very accurate response by Sue Street, lawyer from Tenn now. When Big Al passed, while the family was at the grave site laying him to rest, the Feds, etc took over everything. While no family members served, there were supposed phone recordings that showed all were involved, including wife. Financial reparations were paid, etc. Sue was right that it was well known, but no one would come after him. Don’t know if it was planned and he passed first, or they just waited until then to take over everything. Many stories about how Big Al was a huge supporter of keeping the peace in the area, making sure families were safe, typical Italian family protection, but if you were unlucky enough to cross the line, you were owned. Stoies of going to his place of business, ie Restaurant, seeing barrels of drugs, prostitutes in back working away, etc. Funny story, use to come to Charleston to play football parlay cards, was turning in cards to play once, and in came one of Big Al’s men to collect cards and money. We laughed about ti for years, we were driving 40 miles one way to play the cards that we could have played in our neighborhood!!!. One thing all knew, if you stepped out of line, you had to worry more about Big Al making things right before the local police gotcha.

The Sodder family billboard was something we all knew of when growing up. Still a mystery from what I know, not living in the area now. The best story (ie happy ending) was that the kids were all taken to Italy and lived there as a punishment for something ( no memory of what), and that is why no evidence (bones) were ever discovered at the burnt down home. What about the axe murderer of Gauley Mountain?

Ms. Horn. My name is John Bourges and I was in the 34 squad in the 80’s and 90’s then Manhattan North Homicide when I retired. I saw Emma Principe listed in your blog, although closed. Any chance you can forward my contact to her? Knew her in Narcotics. JB
